About

SPP 2331: Machine Learning in Chemical Engineering is a research programme that brings together the chemical engineering (ChemEng) and machine learning (ML) communities and was established by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation). SPP 2331 has started in October 2021 and contains 11 research & 2 collaborating research projects.

SPP 2331 will catalyze the transformation of the chemical industry towards renewable energy and feedstock supply by using ML, thereby overcoming current limitations of mechanistic modeling in ChemEng. We provide a detailed perspective in a recent article: Machine Learning in Chemical Engineering: A Perspective (Schweidtmann, A. M., Esche, E., Fischer, A., Kloft, M., Repke, J. U., Sager, S., & Mitsos, A. (2021), Chemie Ingenieur Technik, 93(12), 2029-2039.).

The goals of SPP 2331 include:

  • Provide solutions to ChemEng problems for which current methods fail through ML
  • Support young (female) researchers
  • Foster collaborations
  • National and international visibility

Call for proposals: The first call for research proposals closed on 19th of January 2021. The second call for proposals for the second three-year funding period starting in early 2025 is now available at: https://www.dfg.de/en/news/news-topics/announcements-proposals/2024/ifr-24-12
